Lehigh Technologies Ends Year with International Expansion, Sustainability Targets and Several Award Honors

ATLANTA & BARCELONA, Spain - Lehigh Technologies, a specialty chemicals company that produces sustainable raw materials from end-of-life tires and post-industrial rubber, ends the 2018 calendar year having completed a major expansion in Europe in addition to being named as an award finalist for the IChem E Global Awards, ICIS Innovation Awards, SPE Automotive Innovation Awards, and The Circulars.

Originally announced in May at the Movin’On 2018 conference, Lehigh’s parent company Michelin unveiled bold plans to develop new tires that will contain 80 percent of sustainable materials by 2048. As a significant part of Michelin’s High Technology Materials Business Unit, Lehigh will help achieve this goal by providing its patented micronized rubber powder (MRP). Lehigh also recently celebrated a decade-long commercial relationship with Michelin’s North America operations. Lehigh’s products allow Michelin’s retread facilities to maintain a zero-waste environment and improve financial bottom-lines.

Lehigh also announced the opening of the Murillo el Fruto MRP plant in Navarra, Spain. The plant, constructed with Lehigh’s Spanish partner HERA Holding, will increase Lehigh’s reach into Europe and the Middle East. To help manage the market expansion, Lehigh announced the hiring of Antón de Castro. Antón will oversee the company's business development and sales activities for MRP and the performance materials market in the EMEA region.

Additionally, Lehigh was honored with several prestigious industry awards that showcase its industry leadership. For its contributions to the circular economy with MRP, Lehigh was named an honoree of the IChem E Global Awards and The Circulars, an initiative of the World Economic Forum and the Forum of Young Global Leaders. In October, Lehigh was honored with ICIS Innovation Awards’ Innovation with Best Benefit to Environment or Sustainability category and was listed as the overall winner of the competition. With Ford Motor Company, Lehigh was recognized as an SPE Automotive Innovation Awards finalist for providing materials for the extension dash panel of the 2019 Ford Edge.

"Lehigh's contributions to the interior of the Ford Edge impressed the judging panel," said Nippani Rao, SPE Automotive Division Emeritus Board Member and Innovation Awards committee member and a judge. The attention placed on sustainability, weight and cost reduction benefits are remarkable and environmentally desirable.

“We’re very humbled by the distinctions,” said Lehigh CEO Paul Crehan. “As the tire and rubber industries start to consider more sustainable alternatives, our MRP will introduce circular economy strategies to a wide scope of operations around the world.”

Lehigh will continue to provide support its valued customers across 18 different countries.
